RICHARD EVANS Piano "Evans is clearly a very talented musician" International Record Review
The Welsh pianist Richard Evans' interpretation of an increasingly wide-ranging repertoire is quickly establishing his reputation as a formidable pianist who brings meaningful lyricism and outstanding virtuosity to his performances.
He has performed in recital, concerto and in chamber music throughout the UK and Europe, including Germany, Italy, Sweden, Norway, Finland, France and Portugal He made his London debut at the Purcell Room - South Bank Centre with a programme including Beethoven's 'Hammerklavier' Sonata, which received a tremendous ovation from the audience and to critical acclaim. Notable engagements also include The Falsterbonäsets International Festival in Sweden; Festival du Valloire and La Folle Journée France; the Barbican Centre London, as part of the Schumann Revealed series; National Museum of Wales as part of their centenary celebrations; St. Martin in the Fields; Fairfield Halls; Steinway Hall; Beethoven Piano Society of Europe; The Chopin Society; Hurstwood Farm; Windsor Festival and Machynlleth Festival. His recent concerto appearances include Liszt's Concerto No.1, Saint-Saëns Carnival of the Animals with pianist Nigel Clayton and Rachmaninoff's 3rd Piano Concerto with the Lambeth Orchestra. Evans has also featured and broadcast on HTV's Prime Time, BBC Radio Cymru/Wales and BBC Radio 3's 'In Tune' with Sean Rafferty. He made his debut recording for Sain Records with a programme featuring Liszt's B Minor Sonata and works by Copland, Barber and Chopin, and has recently recorded his second recital disc featuring works by Haydn, Debussy, Rachmaninoff and Liszt. This was made possible by the generous support of Blüthner Pianos, recording engineer Peter Harrison and producer Dr. Peter Katin. Samples of both discs are available on the 'Listen' page of this web site. Chamber music has become increasingly more important to his career. As a student, he was privileged to give a recital with legendary clarinettist Sir Jack Brymer - This was one of the most magical and truly inspirational moments of my career thus far. I remember being so excited about this engagement but also being a little apprehensive as we were to meet and rehearse on the day of the concert! As it happened, Sir Jack was caught up in traffic and arrived an hour before the concert so we only had a chance to talk very briefly about the programme. As the recital began I soon realised that making music with him was amazing and effortless. I learnt so much from him, musically and artistically, he was so supportive. He now collaborates with soprano Katharine Fuge and has worked with clarinettist Sarah Williamson. Evans frequently adjudicates at many Eisteddfod in Wales, including Eisteddfod Genedlaethol Cymru / National Eisteddfod of Wales, a competition he won as a boy - This is very important for me. The Eisteddfod is at the heart of Welsh cultural life and is invaluable for young students. It gave me tremendous performing opportunities, not only the piano, but also playing the harp, singing and recitation. It's great to return and continue the tradition. He recently also adjudicated the Hastings International Piano Concerto Competition. Richard Evans grew up in Harlech, Wales and currently lives in London. He studied at the Royal College of Music, London with John Blakely and completed his studies with Dr Peter Katin. He has also worked with Bernard Roberts and vocal coach Paul Farrington. Richard Evans received an award from the Pottesman Trust following his Steinway Hall performance. |
